Russia, U.S. urge N.Korea to show restraint over launch plans

Topic: G20 summit

18:40 01/04/2009
LONDON, April 1 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and the United States are concerned by the possible launch of a North Korean ballistic missile, and urge the country to show restraint, the two presidents said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

"We also expressed concern that a North Korean ballistic missile launch would be damaging to peace and stability in the region and agreed to urge the DPRK to exercise restraint and observe relevant UN Security Council resolutions," said the statement, released after Barack Obama's meeting with Dmitry Medvedev ahead of the G20 summit.

Last month, North Korea announced the planned launch, due to take place from its Musudan-ri launch site. The U.S., Japan and South Korea, who have condemned the plans, believe that the secretive state is planning to test its Taepodong-2 long-range missile.

North Korea has denied the allegations, saying that a Kwangmyongsong-2 experimental satellite will be put into orbit for "peaceful purposes".

The Russian and U.S. presidents also reiterated their commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear issue, and urged Tehran to "seize this opportunity to address the international community's concerns."

"We call on Iran to fully implement the relevant U.N. Security Council and the IAEA Board of Governors resolutions including provision of required cooperation with the IAEA," they said.

During his election campaign, U.S. President Barack Obama said he was open to talks with the Iranian leadership. International meetings such as Tuesday's Afghanistan conference in The Hague, and last week's talks in Moscow, have been closely watched for signs of a more open policy between the two countries.
