MOSCOW, April 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russian operatives have prevented a major terrorist act from being carried out in Chechnya, seizing 60 kilograms of explosives on April 9, a senior Interior Ministry official said on Tuesday.

"Ammunition, cluster bombs and bomb-making equipment along with 60 kg of explosives were found in a cache," Denis Sugrobov told reporters. "Intelligence said militants planned to use the explosives for a terrorist attack that was to have attracted a lot of publicity."

He said the cache was discovered as part of a series of special operations against a group of counterfeiters based in southern Russia.

Sugrobov said police had broken up an organized crime group that was printing fake money and using it to fund militant activity in the North Caucasus.

The operations were carried out from November 2007 until April 2009 in the Caucasus republics of Daghestan, Ingushetia and Chechnya, as well as the Rostov and Voronezh regions.

Police seized about 15 million counterfeit rubles ($450,000), mostly in 1,000-ruble denominations, and $90,000, in $100 bills, as well as printing equipment and materials, including paper with high-quality imitation security features.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the Federal Security Service (FSB) chief in late March to consider formally ending the counter-terrorist operation in Chechnya.
