Eurovision public events center opens in Moscow

14:32 05/05/2009
MOSCOW, May 5 (RIA Novosti) - A public events center for the upcoming Eurovision-2009 Song Contest was opened in central Moscow on Tuesday.

Representatives of 41 European countries plus Israel will take part in the competition, to be held at the Olimpiisky Sports Complex, built for the 1980 Olympic Games, on May 10-16.

The Euroclub events center, also named as Eurodom, is located in the Manezh exhibition hall, and is expected to be visited daily by 1,500 guests from participating countries.

The venue will host disco nights and themed parties, as well as a Welcome Party on May 10.

Moscow won the right to host the event for the first time after Russian pop singer Dima Bilan took first place in last year's Eurovision, held in Belgrade, with his song Believe.

This year Russia will be represented by Ukrainian singer Anastasia Prikhodko.

Over 8,500 police and security officers will be on duty at the Eurovision 2009 Song Contest. The Russian capital has spent some 200 million rubles ($6 million) on organizing the event.

More than 500 guests and participants in the contest have already arrived in Moscow. Police Maj.-Gen. Alexander Ivanov, the acting city police chief, said around 5,000 fans will be coming in from outside the city, and a total of 20,000 will attend the shows daily.
