MOSCOW, June 11 (RIA Novosti) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will participate in this weekend's summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a Russian deputy foreign minister said on Thursday.
"The president of Islamic Republic of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, plans to take part in this event as the representative of an observer country," Alexei Borodavkin said.
The SCO summit will take place on June 15-16 in Yekaterinburg.
Borodavkin met with the director of the Iranian Foreign Ministry's CIS department on Thursday for discussions on international issues and key aspects of Russian-Iranian political and economic cooperation ahead of the upcoming summit.
The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) comprises Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The group primarily addresses security issues, but has been widening its remit to embrace economic and energy projects.
