Police officer shot dead in S.Russia

MAKHACHKALA, July 1 (RIA Novosti) - A traffic police officer was killed and another injured a shooting on Wednesday in Russia's North Caucasus Republic of Daghestan, a spokesman for the republic's interior ministry said.

The incident occurred at around 18:40 Moscow time (14:40 GMT) on the Kavkaz Federal Highway, some 20 km north of the regional capital, Makhachkala.

"Unidentified assailants opened fire on a car with two road police officers. One died of injuries immediately, and the other was taken to hospital in a serious condition," the source said.

A search for the attackers is underway.
