Russia to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050 - Medvedev

L'AQUILA, July 10 (RIA Novosti) - Russia pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50% by 2050 on 1990 levels, President Dmitry Medvedev said Friday.

"We are ready to make our contribution - at least 50% by 2050 in comparison with 1990," Medvedev told journalists after the G8 summit in Italy's L'Aquila.

He said the goal was to develop energy saving policies and own economy as a consequence. "It's an ambitious, complicated task," he said.

"We will try to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by 2020 on 1990 levels by 10-15%," he said.

The Group of Eight leading industrial nations adopted a statement on Wednesday, the first day of their summit in Italy, in which they agreed rich nations would cut greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050 and global cuts would reach at least 50% by the same date.

G8 leaders also said they would attempt to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 F) above pre-industrial levels.
