Three workers of Russia's Emergencies Ministry were killed in an attack by unidentified assailants in the Russian North Caucasus Republic of Ingushetia, a spokesman for the republican Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

ROSTOV-ON-DON, August 2 (RIA Novosti) - Three workers of Russia's Emergencies Ministry were killed in an attack by unidentified assailants in the Russian North Caucasus Republic of Ingushetia, a spokesman for the republican Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

The attack occurred early on Sunday when gunmen opened automatic fire with automatic weapons from a VAZ car, the spokesman said over the phone.

An investigation into the incident has been launched, the spokesman said.

Violence has spiraled in Russia's mainly Muslim North Caucasus regions in recent months. Attacks on police, troops and authorities have been staged almost daily and are blamed on militants infiltrating from Chechnya.

Chechnya has also seen a surge in violence since the Kremlin officially ended its anti-terrorism operation in April. The republic saw two brutal separatist wars in the 1990s and early 2000s.
