MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti) - One person was killed and another 10 injured in a road traffic accident involving a bus and truck in Russia's Irkutsk Region, a police spokesman said on Saturday.
The accident occurred some 3 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the town of Nizhneudinsk when a bus pulled out from a side road into the path of an oncoming truck.
"The scheduled bus hit the truck as it entered a main road from a side road. As a result of the crash one person died instantly and another 10 were hospitalized with various injuries," the spokesman said.
Russia, which has one of the highest death rates in Europe, has been hit by a spate of road traffic accidents over the past few weeks, including those involving buses, which have left around 100 people dead. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has criticized traffic police, drivers and a culture of poor road discipline for a rise in roads deaths across the country.
The network of Russian highways is one of the world's longest, but only 20% of regional roads meet international safety standards, at least 10,000 people are thought to have died in accidents so far this year.
