MAKHACHKALA, August 10 (RIA Novosti) - An explosion caused by a road-side bomb killed one border guard and wounded another in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, a local Interior Ministry official said on Monday.
"The incident occurred on Monday morning in the town of Derbent [the second most important city of Dagestan, close to the Azerbaijani border]," the source said.
"The bomb exploded when an UAZ patrol car carrying border guards was moving along Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya street," he said.
A team of explosives experts is working at the site to determine the type and the power of the explosive device.
Two police officers and one militant were killed overnight in a shootout in Dagestan when the occupants of a Zhiguli sedan opened fire at police during an ID check.
Dagestan and other regions in Russia's volatile North Caucasus have seen a rise in violence in recent months, with attacks on police, troops and authorities and skirmishes being reported almost daily.
