One militant killed, two escape in Chechen police sweep

MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) - A militant was killed during a firefight with police late on Tuesday in the Vedeno district of Russia's North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, while two other gunmen fled the scene, a local police source said on Wednesday.
"During a police sweep in the village of Makhety, three militants opened fire on police officers. One militant was killed in the ensuing firefight, while two others managed to escape. There are no casualties among the police," the source said.
Police found two homemade explosive devices and 180 rounds of ammunition at the site of the incident.
Militants in Chechnya and neighboring republics have carried out several attacks on police, troops and government officials almost daily in recent weeks, including a truck bombing in Ingushetia on August 24 that killed at least 24 police.
