MOSCOW, September 24 (RIA Novosti) - At least 50 were injured and one man was killed in Wednesday's deadly explosion at a fireworks warehouse in the southwest Russian city of Voronezh, the Russian Prosecutor General Office's investigation committee said on Thursday.

The blast and ensuing fire destroyed the one-story warehouse and damaged nearby five- and nine-story residential buildings.

Immediate reports in the wake of the incident said that 54 people were injured in the accident. However, the regional emergencies ministry department established that 20 of these people suffered only very minor injuries and cited an official number of 34 injured.

The committee said in a statement that the man killed in the accident was a 48-year-old technician, who worked at the nearby military base.

"At least 50 people were injured. Damage was also inflicted on the property of people residing in the nearby residential buildings as well as to the property of the military base," the statement said.

Voronezh Region emergency services chief Igor Kobzev said earlier that those injured were residents of apartment buildings near the warehouse. Their injuries, he said, were caused by glass shards from the windows shattered by the explosion.

He also said that, according to preliminary information "violations of safety standards for storing explosive material could have caused the blast."
