MOSCOW, September 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has congratulated German Chancellor Angela Merkel on election victory in a phone conversation, the Kremlin press service said in a statement.
"Both sides expressed confidence that Russia and Germany would continue to deepen partnership and cooperation in their relations on the basis of intensive dialogue and close cooperation in global politics and European affairs," the statement reads.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has also had a phone conversation with Merkel, the press service of the Russian government said.
Merkel, 55, announced victory for a new coalition of her conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) and pro-business Free Democrats (FDP) after Sunday's polls. The new government spells the end for the "grand coalition" of Merkel's party and the center-left Social Democrats (SPD) that has governed Germany for the past four years.
