MOSCOW, October 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's president congratulated Jacques Rogge on Friday on his re-election as head of the International Olympic Committee, and pledged to strengthen ties with the IOC.
Rogge, 67, has been IOC president since 2001, and was elected in Copenhagen for a second term of four years earlier in the day.
"I want to thank you again for supporting Russia's active participation in the international Olympic movement. As before, we are ready to continue fruitful cooperation in all directions of the IOC's activities," the Kremlin press service quoted Dmitry Medvedev as saying in a letter to the Belgian official.
Medvedev described Rogge's victory as "uncontestable confirmation" of his important role in the international sports community.
After the vote, Rogge said: "We will continue to deliver outstanding Games, we will safeguard and strengthen our assets. We will be staunch allies for the athletes and continue the fight against doping."
Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi is preparing to host the 2014 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games. The city won the right to host the Olympics at an IOC session in Guatemala in July 2007 after a close race with South Korea's Pyeongchang and Austria's Salzburg.
The Ministry of Regional Development earlier said that 1.054 trillion rubles ($36 bln) is to be spent between 2009 and 2012 on a government program for the construction of Olympic facilities, with 699.3 billion rubles ($23.6 bln) to be allocated from the federal budget.
