U.S. deports Russian suspect in robbery
MOSCOW, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - The U.S. extradited on Saturday a Russian citizen facing charges of robbery, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office said on its website.
Russia accuses Armenian-born David Stepanyants of committing a robbery attack in the Astrakhan Region, in the country's south, in 2000.
"Today, accompanied by officials from Russia's Interpol bureau, David Stepanyants was deported to Russia," Russian prosecutors said.
The man's family fled to the U.S. in 1996 and have been granted asylum there. Stepanyants came to visit them there in 2001 and overstayed his visa. He then applied for political asylum, but his application was denied in 2006.
Stepanyants was put on the international wanted list in September 2002 and was arrested in the United States for violating immigration law in 2009.
