YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, October 29 (RIA Novosti) - A severe storm in Russia's northern Kuril Islands has left some 3,000 residents without electricity, regional official Renat Gizatullin said on Thursday.
The storm, which was formed southeast of Tokyo on Monday, brought heavy rains and high winds of 41 meters per second (92 mph), downing power lines and poles in the Pacific city of Severo-Kurilsk early on Thursday.
"Because of strong winds reaching 41 meters per second, power lines and several poles [in the area] were downed in the city," Gizatullin told RIA Novosti.
Hospitals and other essential organizations are operating on emergency power and residents should receive electricity by the end of Thursday, Gizatullin said.
