Artillery depot fire in east Russia leaves 1 dead, 35 missing
ULYANOVSK, November 13 (RIA Novosti) - One person died and 35 are missing after a fire triggered multiple explosions at a military depot in the city of Ulyanovsk in Russia's Volga Region, emergencies services said Friday.
"One civilian specialist is known to have died for sure," an emergencies source said.
Ulyanovsk Region governor Sergei Morozov said over 3,000 people were evacuated from the nearby areas after explosions started at about 4:00 pm (Moscow time) [13:00 GMT].
According to the Russian Federal Security Service, the fire emerged during the controlled destruction of ammunition because "the set cycle was broken." The fire "entailed further blasts of ammunition," the service said.
