ULYANOVSK, November 15 (RIA Novosti) - Teams of sappers have started clearing the site of a fatal incident at a weapons depot in the Volga Region of 42 unexploded artillery shells scattered around the area, a local government officials said.

A series of explosions at a Navy arms depot in the Volga city of Ulyanovsk on Friday night killed two servicemen and injured at least six. Shockwaves from the explosions smashed windows in nine schools and 20 kindergartens. Due to damage to housing, 105 people have been placed in hotels, including 17 children.

"Work on the destruction of the undetonated shells is currently underway. There is no danger to residents," Natalia Martynova said late on Saturday.

The Russian Defense Ministry earlier said the explosions were believed to have occurred while ammunition was being destroyed at the depot. Twenty firefighting crews were called in to fight the ensuing blaze, which was put out during the night.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev issued an order on Saturday to conduct an investigation into the incident and safety checks at all country's weapons depots.
