MAKHACHKALA, November 22 (RIA Novosti) - Police have freed the abducted son of the mayor of the town of Buinaksk in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Dagestan, Russia's Investigative Committee said on Sunday.
Magomed-Shamil Shakhbanov, the son of the town's incumbent head, was abducted on November 17 by unknown assailants clad in camouflage uniforms. They forced Shakhbanov who was at his construction site into a Vaz-21099 car and drove away.
According to the Investigative Committee, the son was abducted by two residents of the village of Maidanskoye in the Utsukulsky district of Dagestan. Both men have been detained.
Militant attacks and clashes remain common in Russia's North Caucasus, even though the Kremlin campaign to fight separatists and terrorists in Chechnya has officially ended.
Violence often spills over into nearby republics, in particular Ingushetia, Dagestan and Kabardino-Balkaria.
