Ten passengers were killed and about 130 injured when a Russian train bound from Moscow to St. Petersburg derailed, an emergencies ministry source said Saturday.
Two Emergency Situations Ministry aircraft are heading to the accident site carrying equipment for a mobile hospital to render medical assistance to injured passengers of the Nevsky Express train whose last four cars went off the railway tracks.
It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.
A Moscow police source told RIA Novosti earlier that the train driver had used the emergency brakes just before the derailment.
Russian Railways earlier said in a statement: "Today at 21:34 [Moscow time, 18:34 GMT], four carriages of passenger train No. 166 traveling from Moscow to St. Petersburg derailed."
Russian Railways (RZD) President Vladimir Yakunin is on his way to the site of the accident, near the town of Bologoye. Medics are also heading to the site.
