A militant was killed on Wednesday in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Dagestan in a joint operation by police and security officers, a spokesman for the republic's interior ministry said.
The source said law enforcers surrounded a house under construction in the town of Khasavyurt where the militant was taking refuge early on Wednesday.
"He opened fire when law enforcers told him to drop his weapon," the source said.
The militant was identified as Muslim Khamzayev, born in 1986.
Russia's North Caucasus republics, in particular Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia, have seen frequent attacks on police and officials this year despite the end of a decade-long special regime for counterterrorism operations in Chechnya a few months ago.
