The swine flu has stabilized in Russia with the number of people suffering from the A/H1N1 virus declining, First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov said.

The swine flu has stabilized in Russia with the number of people suffering from the A/H1N1 virus declining, First Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov said.

"Presently, the situation has stabilized," Zubkov said. "In 58 Russian regions from the beginning of December, the number of cases has sharply declined," he added.

According to him, a governmental commission created in May has completed its work effectively. The facilities for a vaccine against the A/H1N1 virus were allocated on time.

"As of to date, 1.6 million people have been vaccinated," he said.

Zubkov added that 29 million Russians will be vaccinated in the first quarter of 2010 using federal budget resources.

According to Zubkov, Russian clinics and retail drugstores are not experiencing any shortages of antiviral medicines.

The World Health Organization reported that the death toll from the swine flu outbreak reached 11,516 worldwide

The number of infections continues to rise in some areas of central and eastern Europe, as well as in western, southern and central Asia, which were hit by the virus outbreak later than other parts of the world, the organization said.

WHO had earlier suspended publishing weekly reports on the spread of swine flu after some countries refused to report each infection.

Russia's consumer watchdog Rospotrebnadzor said there were 21,000 swine flu cases officially registered across the country as of December 7.
