Police detained over 50 people on Moscow's Triumph Square for an attempt to hold a protest rally, a law enforcement source said on Thursday.
Some 30,000 people have gathered in downtown Moscow for traditional New Year's festivities, which include a concert on Triumph Square.
"Police arrested over 50 people who tried to hold an unauthorized protest meeting near the Triumph Square," the source said.
Moscow police have been on high alert due to mass celebrations on the New Year's Eve. Some 4,000 additional law enforcement officers are on patrol downtown Moscow.
