Russia has provided U.S. investigators with data on Nazi death camps which could lead to the prosecution of alleged WWII war criminals, the Federal Security Service (FSB) said Monday.

"We released our archive data on Nazi death camps and sent it to the United States at the request of the U.S. judicial authorities," an FSB spokesman said.

He added that the data is being used in the trial of alleged Nazi guard John Demjanjuk, who has been charged with involvement in the murder of 27,900 people at a concentration camp during WWII.

The trial of Ukrainian-born Demjanjuk, 89, resumed in Munich in December.

A retired autoworker, Demjanjuk was sent from the U.S. to a German prison last May after having lost his legal fight against deportation on grounds of ill health.
