Russian court authorities on Friday closed two disco bars and a cafe at the leased Cosmodrome Baikonur complex in Kazakhstan in line with a nationwide safety campaign launched after a disastrous fire in a Urals night club.

President Dmitry Medvedev ordered compliance checks in regard to safety rules in all places of leisure after a fire in the Lame Horse club in the city of Perm that killed 155 people in December.

Baikonur's once crowded residential compound built by the now defunct Soviet Union now has lost much of its population, but maintained some elements of night life.

Russian authorities closed the Hollywood and Luna (Moon) disco bars for two weeks, and the Caravan cafe for 60 days ordering their owners to improve fire safety regulations.

Since December, hundreds of amusement centers, restaurants, clubs and theaters have been shut down by fire safety watchdogs, many officials have been fined and some have lost their jobs in the campaign triggered by the Lame Horse fire.

Russia leases the Baikonur space center from Kazakhstan. The Cosmodrome is managed jointly by the Russian Federal Space Agency and the Russian Space Forces.
