Russian biologists in Siberia have boosted the growth rate of aspens nearly eightfold, enabling them to grow four meters tall in only two years, Russia's Academy of Sciences said on Friday.

Russian biologists in Siberia have boosted the growth rate of aspens nearly eightfold, enabling them to grow four meters tall in only two years, Russia's Academy of Sciences said on Friday.

"Today, the Siberian Institute of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry using various methods has come up with two species of fast-growing trees: aspens and poplars. The have an ability to grow seven [to] eight times faster than the normal species," the statement said.

The discovery was made following a series of experiments in which scientists at the Siberian Institute of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry in Irkutsk put a corn gene in the aspen cells. The trees can be used as bio-fuel.

The corn gene contains the hormone gibberellin which stimulates growth in plants.
