The United Nations and the Russia-dominated Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) have good opportunities to cooperate in peacekeeping, Russia's envoy to the UN told the UN Security Council on Friday.
"Good opportunities for developing peacekeeping cooperation with the UN open in light of the establishment of the CSTO's peacekeeping potential," Vitaly Churkin said.
The agreement on the CSTO's peacekeeping activity entered into force in January 2009. It envisions the creation of the CSTO peacekeeping force.
The CSTO comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Observer status is enjoyed by Iran, India, Mongolia and Pakistan.
