Police have identified a suspect in the murder of rights activist Natalia Estemirova in Chechnya in July, a security official in the southern Russian region said on Thursday.

Estemirova, a researcher with Russia's Memorial group, was abducted in the capital Grozny and found shot dead in the neighboring North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia.

The rights group suspended work in the volatile republic for several months after the killing, which sparked international outrage.

"Investigators have identified the criminal who killed the rights activist," the official said giving no further details. He said the suspect was being searched for.

No official comments on the report are available at the moment.

Estemirova's murder was followed three weeks later by the brutal killings of Zarema Sadulayeva and her husband, Alik Dzhabrailov, who both worked for a Chechen charity.
