Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov proposed on Tuesday that senior officials of the North Caucasus Republic wear traditional garments on national holidays.

Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov proposed on Tuesday that senior officials of the North Caucasus Republic wear traditional garments on national holidays.

"Chechens have very beautiful national costumes," Kadyrov said. "I think that ministers and other senior officials wearing our traditional garments on national holidays would look very nice."

Kadyrov, who is an ardent promoter of Chechen traditions and culture, also said, "Every man and every woman respecting his or her nation and traditions must possess a national costume."

Chechen men traditionally wear a long heavy robe (caftan), called a chokha or cherkeska, with a single button at the waist with flared sleeves reaching below the hands. The traditional men's headgear is a papakha, a large sheepskin hat. They also wear a silver belt with a dagger.

Chechen women wear a long dress with a gold or silver belt and cover their heads with a scarf.
