Ash clouds from the eruption of a volcano in Iceland are continuing to spread over Russia and will soon reach the country's Far East, a meteorologist told RIA Novosti on Monday.

Ash clouds from the eruption of a volcano in Iceland are continuing to spread over Russia and will soon reach the country's Far East, a meteorologist told RIA Novosti on Monday.

However, there is no serious health threat to local residents and the airport in the Far Eastern city of Khabarovsk is likely to remain open, a spokesman for the Khabarovsk meteorological centre said.

"Only Spain, the north of Norway and the south-west of the continent will be free from volcano ash," the Russian meteorological center announced on Sunday.

The forecast also said the ash cloud would reach the Black Sea on April 19.

The eruption on the Eyjafjallajokull Glacier in Iceland, which began on Wednesday, has disabled air traffic throughout central and northern Europe, leaving thousands of travelers stranded.

A total of 264 flights from Russian airports were delayed or cancelled after an ash cloud spread over Europe from a volcano eruption in Iceland.
