A militant leader was killed in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia on Wednesday, a law enforcement source said.

The source said Magomed Gardanov was killed in a special security operation in the city of Nazran. A woman died of her wounds and another two people, including one teenager, were injured during the operation.

Gardanov was said to be "closely linked" to Said Buryatsky, a religious extremist leader who was killed on March 2.

The operation was carried out by agents of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Directorate for the Republic of Ingushetia.

The FSB confirmed Gardanov's identity and said he had been involved in a series of high-profile terrorist attacks.

Police and government officials are frequently the targets of militant attacks in Ingushetia, including on Tuesday when 11 police officers were injured in a grenade attack on a police station.

Following a double suicide bombing in Moscow in March, the Kremlin pledged to wage "a ruthless fight" against militant groups, but it has also acknowledged a need to tackle unemployment, organized crime, clan rivalry and corruption as causes of the ongoing violence in the North Caucasus region.
