Russia's new Cyrillic alphabet Internet domain (.рф) has launched so far 476 sites, Yulia Ovchinnikova of Russia's Coordination Center for the National Internet Domain said on Tuesday.

Russia's .рф is the top-level domain for the Internet in Russian and contain only letters from the Russian alphabet.

The Russian presidential and government websites became the first to use the Cyrillic Internet domain (.рф) after it was officially launched in Russia on May 13. As of May 25, some 500 Russian domain sites opened.

Ovchinnikova said яндекс.рф (yandex.rf) and секс.рф (sex.rf) were among websites launched on the Cyrillic domain on Tuesday.

In November 2008, .рф was approved by ICANN following a request by President Dmitry Medvedev. The domain is aimed at raising the status of Russian as a global language, and is hoped to expand Internet use among Russian speakers unfamiliar with Latin characters.
