A fire that swept through the building of Russia's air defense firm Almaz-Antei in northern Moscow on Wednesday has been brought under control, an Emergencies Ministry spokesman said.

"The fire in the attic of the seven-storey manufacturing building at Leningradsky prospekt, 80 has been localized. Thirty-five fire crews were involved in bringing the fire under control," he said.

The fire covered an area of around 800 square meters. Earlier reports said 1,500 square meters were affected.

Two emergency helicopters have been deployed to control the spread.

Oleg Mitvol, the prefect of Moscow's northern district, said the fire may have been caused by the violation of construction work regulations.

"[Construction] work involving open flames was being carried out on the seventh floor," he said.

Almaz-Antei is one of Russia's largest air defense manufacturers, specializing in production of small, medium and long-range air defense systems, including
