Russia backs the initiative of United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to launch an international probe into the Israeli raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.
"I think it is a reasonable proposal," Lavrov told a news conference after talks with Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.
Lavrov said the international investigation should take into account ongoing Israeli and Turkish probes.
Moussa said the incident, which he described as "a direct violation of international law," should be looked into by the UN Security Council.
Ban called in early June for an international probe into the Israeli raid on the Gaza-bound humanitarian aid convoy.
Israeli commandos stormed the six-ship Freedom Flotilla on May 31 in international waters off the coast of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip as it carried some 10,000 tons of aid and up to 700 human rights activists to the Palestinian enclave.
Nine activists were killed and dozens were injured.
