Four miners were admitted to hospital on Saturday following a methane ignition at a coal mine in Russia's Western Siberia, a spokeswoman for the local emergency services said.

The incident occurred at the Krasnogorskaya mine in the Kemerovo region's town of Prokopyevsk at about 02:00am Moscow time (22:00 GMT, Friday).

Two miners were taken to hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning, and the two others with burns, the spokeswoman said.

Rescuers have established contact with three miners who remain underground, including the one who was earlier reported missing, she said.

The latest emergency services' report said a total of 66 miners had been in the mine when the blast occurred.

In May, two methane blasts at the Raspadskaya coalmine, also located in the Kemerovo region, killed 67 workers and left 23 unaccounted for. The accident is believed to have been caused by poor observation of safety regulations.
