The RusHydro hydroelectricity company will test the Siberian Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydropower Plant spillway in September, a member of the company's executive board said on Thursday.
An accident occurred at the Sayano-Shushenskaya plant on Siberia's Yenisei River in August 2009, killing 75 people and destroying a turbine hall. The accident also destroyed three hydropower units and damaged the other seven. The plant is under reconstruction.
"We should be ready to use the spillway in winter. We plan to test it in September," Yury Gorbenko said during an Internet conference organized by RIA Novosti.
Sayano-Shushenskaya's spillway is an additional facility with a capacity of 4,000 cubic meters per hour. The facility is aimed at providing security in time of spring floods. The first unit of the spillway was ready in June 2010 but the facility is on standby.
This year, the spillway is unlikely to be put into operation, Nikolai Stefanenko, head of the Sayano-Shushenskaya plant monitoring service said at the same conference.
