Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will pay a visit to Poland on September 1-2 to hold talks with his Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski and Polish premier Donald Tusk.
He would also deliver a speech on geopolitical issues and modern international relations at a meeting of Polish ambassadors and permanent representatives
The Russian Foreign Ministry said it expected to enhance cooperation with Poland on the basis of bilateral interests and implementation of agreements reached by the two countries' heads of states and governments.
Visa-free travel for residents of Russian Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad and interpretations of the common past are among practical issues to be discussed during the visit.
"We highly value the initiative of Radoslaw Sikorski to extend the future Russian-Polish agreement to extend the local border traffic zone to the whole territory of the Kaliningrad Region and bordering regions of Poland," the ministry said.
According to the EU laws, EU visas are not required for citizens living in the local border traffic zone (in the 30-km area) to cross the external EU border.
The ministry also said that controversies on the Soviet past "should not have negative impact for present and future relations."
"We hope to cooperate with the Polish partners in implementing agreements between [Russian Prime Minister] Vladimir Putin and [Polish Prime Minister] Donald Tusk to establish memorial centers operating concurrently in Russia and Poland under the aegis of the two countries' culture ministries. We hope to make historical issues solely a matter of science, moral and ethics," the ministry said.
