A French helicopter pilot who made an emergency landing in the Far Eastern Chukotka Peninsula in early August was fined $100 on Monday for violating the Russian border.

The pilot of the two-seat light helicopter HeliSport CH-7 Kompress was performing a round-the-world trip. He left France in mid-July, he flew to the U.S. via the U.K., Iceland, Greenland and Canada and planned to fly to Europe across the Russian territory.

The French national, however, had to perform an emergency landing in an unpopulated area in Russia's Chukotka Peninsula, possibly after the fuel had run out.

The court ruled that the traveler flew to the town of Pevek in the Chukotka Autonomous Area without having a permission to perform a flight in the Russian airspace.

The pilot, who now stays in the regional capital Anadyr, is now deciding on whether he should repair his helicopter and continue the journey.
