The Russian government will spend about 3 billion rubles ($97 million) on the technical modernization of the country's election system over the next three years, the head of the Russian Central Election Commission said on Thursday.
"The figures are now being discussed by the Russian government. We are talking about a sum of more than 1 billion rubles ($32 million) for the next year. In general, it [the spending] will be about 3 billion in [the next] three years," Vladimir Churov said.
The technical modernization of the election system stipulates the introduction of web cameras, electronic voting systems and other equipment allowing better supervision of the voting process at polling stations, he said.
A bill that would allow remote voting has not yet been introduced to the Russian parliament's lower house, Churov said, adding that such a system could first be tested on Russians living abroad.
"It seems to me that remote voting should be extended to other locations as well," he added.
