Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has called for drafting new global conventions on intellectual property saying that the existing ones fail to regulate developing technologies.

"The approaches should be changed on a world scale," Medvedev said at a meeting with Russian rock musicians on Monday evening at the Rhythm and Blues Cafe.

The Russian leader said existing legal documents on the rights of authors, the Geneva and Bern conventions, were signed when there no modern technologies existed allowing the downloading of information within seconds.

Medvedev said in Russia the situation is "the toughest." "When everyone starts treating this like any other crime, then a change will occur and the fear of doing this [illegally] will appear," he said.
