Over 30 people were detained at a Day of Wrath protest rally in downtown Moscow on Tuesday, police said.

Among those detained at the Tverskaya Square protest were rally organizer Sergei Udaltsov and rights activist Lev Ponomarev.

Among the protestors’ demands were direct elections for the city’s new mayor. Long-serving Yury Luzhkov was recently fired by President Dmitry Medvedev.

Some 50 people took part in the rally, which was covered by around 150 journalists.

As well as Day of Wrath protests, Russian opposition groups rally on Triumfalnaya Square in Moscow on the last day of each month that has 31 days in defense of their right to freedom of assembly, as enshrined in Article 31 of the Russian Constitution. The unsanctioned rallies usually result in mass detentions.
