Russia's Interior Ministry will follow up and check every complaint made against the country's police officers, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said on Monday.

Russia's Interior Ministry will follow up and check every complaint made against the country's police officers, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said on Monday.

He said some 2,800 complaints aimed at "discrediting" Russian police officers were made in 2008-2010.

"This situation should be changed. We are working on introducing mandatory inspections after receiving disparaging reports," Nurgaliyev said.

Nurgaliyev said that such a practice currently exists, however it is inefficient.

The minister also said that police uniforms should be withdrawn for sale from shops.

Police uniforms are currently on open sale in Russia, and the number of crimes committed by people disguised as policemen has grown.

The state of Russia's police has become a great concern after a number of high-profile police incidents, including the random shooting of several people in a supermarket by an off-duty police officer in April 2009.

In response to growing criticism, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered a large-scale reform of the police, including cuts in officer numbers and the increase of salaries.
