Russia and the European Union have made solid advances towards a new partnership agreement at talks in Brussels, Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.
"The delegations have made progress on agreeing four clauses of the future agreement: on cooperation in political dialogue; on cooperation in the spheres of freedom, security and justice; on economic cooperation; and on cooperation in culture, education, media and sport," a statement on the ministry website said.
The first partnership agreement was drawn up in 2003 and remains in place despite officially expiring in 2007. Talks on a new agreement stalled after the military conflict between Russia and Georgia in August 2008 and progress has been fitful since they resumed four months later.
The latest round of talks was held in Brussels on Friday.
