Bill Browder, the head of British hedge fund Hermitage Capital, said on Monday he would not pay an alleged tax debt of 500 million rubles ($16 mln) to the Russian authorities.

Russian investigators have accused Browder of conspiring with Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, who died in pretrial detention last year, to embezzle over 500 million rubles in tax evasion schemes, but have offered to close the case if he pays the debt voluntarily.

Browder said in an interview with the Echo Moskvy radio station that the offer was "absurd" as he had never received any complaints or charges from the Russian tax authorities.

According to the investigation, Hermitage Capital established dummy firms in Russia's Kalmykia in the late 1990s to trade shares in Russian energy giant Gazprom.
