The number terrorist acts in Russia's North Caucasus federal district has doubled year-on-year, Deputy Chief Prosecutor Ivan Sydoruk said on Wednesday.

"The number of terrorist acts in the region has increased 100 percent and reached 14 [terrorist acts]," Sydoruk said during a meeting on fighting against illegal arms trafficking and revealing crimes against law enforcers in the North Caucasus.

Sydoruk said that during 2010, over 30 counter-terrorism operations were held in the region, resulting in the elimination of over 300 militants. More than 1,665 firearms were seized along with 91,846 units of ammunition, 1,200 kilograms of explosive material, as well as more than 110 explosive devices.

Sixteen militant leaders were eliminated, 58 terrorist acts were foiled, Sydoruk said.

Russia's North Caucasus republics, in particular, Dagestan, Chechnya and Ingushetia, have seen a dramatic rise in militant activity of late, with attacks on police, federal forces and officials reported almost daily.

In mid-August, Medvedev criticized his envoy to the North Caucasus, Alexander Khloponin, for the poor situation in Dagestan, which is among the most subsidized Russian regions with very low quality of life.
