Police detained 12 participants of an unsanctioned rally in support of jailed ex-Yukos head Mikhail Khodorkovsky near a downtown Moscow court building on Monday.

"Police detained 12 people for attempting to stage an unsanctioned rally. All those detained were taken to a police department, an investigation is ongoing," a police spokesman said.

Earlier on Monday, former oil tycoon Khodorkovsky and his business partner Platon Lebedev were declared guilty by Judge Victor Danilkin at the culmination of their second new trial in Moscow's Khamovniki court.

The two men, who have already spent seven years behind bars, face up to 14 years in jail. Both defendants have repeatedly maintained their innocence and claimed that the charges against them were politically motivated.

Khodorkovsky's lawyer, Karinna Moskalenko, said the defense planned to appeal the verdict. She also expressed her regret over the guilty verdict for her client.

The defendants took the verdict on Monday calmly. Lebedev started reading a book and Khodorkovsky looked through handwritten papers. Both men were smiling as they listened to the judge.
