Russian political opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, arrested after an anti-Kremlin rally in downtown Moscow, was attacked with a butterfly net shortly after leaving jail.

The Ekho Moskvy radio station reported early on Sunday three young men approached Nemtsov from behind and tried to put the net on his head.

Nemtsov said he saw the incident as "a provocation," most likely by members of pro-Kremlin youth movements.

This is not the first time Nemtsov, the former deputy prime minister turned opposition leader, is attacked with a butterfly net. The idea probably originated in 2007, when a member of the pro-Kremlin youth movement Nashi tried to "catch" Nemtsov into a butterfly net with a sign "political insect" on it.

At least two similar cases have earlier been reported in the media last year - in the Sheremetyevo airport in mid-November and while Nemtsov was presenting an analytical report in Ivanovo in July.

Nemtsov was arrested along with some 70 other people, including opposition figures Konstantin Kosyakin and Eduard Limonov, during the unsanctioned rally that broke out after the regular, sanctioned, March of Dissent meeting on December 31. A court sentenced him to 15 days in jail for "disobeying police instructions."
