The Russian Justice Ministry has rejected a party registration request filed by notorious nationalist leader Eduard Limonov, a ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.

The ministry turned down the registration request of The Other Russia party, known mostly for its participation in Strategy 31 rallies in Moscow and other Russian cities, on the grounds that some provisions of its charter violate federal laws.

"On January 19, we notified them that registration was denied. The letter included four pages of objections to some provisions of the charter, which violated federal law on political parties," the spokesman said.

The party said on its website that they learned the news from the media and received no letters from the ministry.

"The Other Russia representatives learned that their party was denied registration from media reports, the ministry avoided contacts with party officials. Despite the fact that the ministry was obliged to answer by January 20, its officials ignored our phone calls," the party's press service said.

Limonov also heads the National Bolshevik party now deemed illegal in Russia.

The Other Russia, along with other opposition parties and human rights movements, attempts to hold rallies on the last day of every month that has 31 days to demand that the government respect Article 31 of the Russian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of assembly.
