An investigation into the death of corporate lawyer Sergei Magnitsky in prison was extended to May, however no suspects in the incident have been established, Magnitsky's lawyer Dmitry Kharitonov said on Thursday.

Magnitsky, who was defending British investment company Hermitage Capital Management against tax evasion charges, died aged 37 in a Moscow pretrial detention facility in November 2009 after being refused medical treatment for pancreatitis.

"The investigation [into the death] was extended to May 17," the lawyer said adding that no suspects who might have been involved in the death have been established.

His death triggered an international outcry amid concerns that his imprisonment could have been the result of official abuses.

Although President Dmitry Medvedev fired several senior prison officials over Magnitsky's death and pledged a full investigation, no one has been prosecuted so far.

In mid-December, the European Parliament called on EU members to impose sanctions on Russian officials involved in Magnitsky's case.
