Three militants have been killed in the Russian North Caucasus republic of Chechnya, a spokesman for Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee said Friday.

"A special operation was conducted by Federal Security Service officers who organized an ambush near an arms cache discovered the day before," the spokesman said.

"A gang of three people came to the cache. When told to surrender, they opened fire and were killed by return fire," he said.

Terrorist attacks and shootouts with police are common in Russia's troubled North Caucasus republics.

Three groups of militants comprising up to 12 assailants attacked various law enforcement buildings in Nalchik, the capital of another North Caucasus republic, Kabardino-Balkaria, earlier Friday.

One traffic policeman was injured in the shooting, no fatalities were reported. The militants escaped.
