A new government service allowing citizens to register short-term residency online will lead to more abuse of the system, lawyers say.

A new government service allowing citizens to register short-term residency online will lead to more abuse of the system, lawyers say.

The service for a 90-day registration on the website gosuslugi.ru has been up and running since January 1.

The Russian government has been looking into ways to encourage people to move around the country, but lack of infrastructure and little economic incentive have hampered the efforts.

"The crossover to the electronic system means that migrants will have to go to third parties who will then get the entire sphere under their control," lawyer Nina Yeremenko told the Russian Agency of Legal and Court Information (RAPSI).

"The novelties open the door for numerous violations, ranging from using fake documents to the theft of the citizens' personal information," lawyer Sergei Zhorin said.

But Russia's Migration Service has dismissed the fears, saying that the list of documents needed to fill out the e-form rules out external interference.
